2. A decorative lighting piece that is less than 20 years old is not considered vintage… even if it does look that old. Although there are some people who buy pieces that have passed the 20 year mark, many hard core enthusiasts prefer vintage pieces that are older than that, but are still in pristine condition. 3. Vintage lamps that have been painted over or given a modern look or reworked to a different style are classified into the poor quality section, and often marketed as “reconstructed” pieces. Vintage table lamps should look almost exactly how the original manufacturers intended these to look. Some vintage lamps are rewired to make them more suitable for present day use, but the work done on these should be minimal at best. Another good rule to bear in mind is this: “restored” is not the same as “reconstructed.” The former means that the vintage table lamps were given a makeover so that it looks like it was first made by the original maker. This is usually done to bring back the pieces’ beauty and unique aspects. The latter means that the lamp was given a whole new facelift and little of the original design remains. This is usually done to sell badly damaged vintage lamps which have very little historical or aesthetic value.

Art Deco lamps, vintage not old, classy, stylish and beautiful as well as difficult to find if you are not sure what you are looking for exactly.

Adorning your home with such works or art can give you the feeling and experience of a beautiful time in history back when craftsman took pride in their work.

The Art Nouvedau style brought out the best of the designers of the age and the art deco lamps they produced were and still are a thing of sheer beauty.

Some of the most beautiful designs and styles first appeared around 1920 and some of the top Art Deco Designers were from Paris where the lamps were considered a form of art and expression of each designer. The art deco lamps, as the name suggests are lamps that have been created for decoration and are a symbolic form of artwork.

Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann was one of the more famous designers of art deco lamps and for that reason his lamps are now some of the most sought after designs. He was well known for his flamboyant styles in both his lamp designs as well as his lifestyle. Ruhlmann was as much as marketer in his day as he was a designer as he often held special events in which he would highlight his own collection throughout Paris in the mid 1020's.

There were however many sought after designers back then with Edgar Brandt also leading the list of famous designers. Traditionally, Art Deco lamps, chandeliers and sconces were made from steel, chrome or polished bronze. However another popular name among designers, Lalique had produced a variety of designs of milky glass table lamps, as well as many larger light fixtures for hotels and businesses.

Art Deco Lamps - Not Your Average Lighting Fixture

Other major glass-makers such as Daum Frères and Tiffany made Art Deco lamps which I guess you could say were not actually inexpensive for the time and still remain so. Gorgeous glass Lalique lamps and other lighting pieces were very popular and continue to be in hot demand today.

Towards the end of the 1920s and into the 1930s, lamps were influenced by the more Modernist style which embraced the Machine Age and made use of the new materials such as chrome, nickel, steel, smoked glass, and Bakelite. In the USA this style was taken up by designers such as Von Nessen and Deskey and sold through all the big department stores from 1927 onwards and throughout the depression years.

Shapes became more geometric and linear. Motifs such as parallel lines, sunbursts, fountains, and ziggurats were common. Many lamps were highly abstract with angular lines and mechanisms for directing the light in different directions. This created that shiny, sleek look that is most associated with art deco lamps.

Glass or porcelain was used to fashion lamp shades - this contributed to the sleek aesthetic of Art Deco Lamps.

In 1932 the famous angle-poise lamp was invented, which has survived ever since, and these are still as stylish and functional as ever. They were originally black enamel, but have been made in all kinds of materials including Bakelite.

Symmetrical and repeating angular designs like zig-zags and chevrons were frequently engraved in metal lamp posts and glass shades that adorned the beautiful Art Deco Lamps.

Steel or chrome with opaque glass are probably the most common of the Art Deco Lamps modernist materials, but there are a wealth of shapes and sizes to choose from. Standard lamps, or Torchères were often very tall, and designed to focus the light upwards. Instead of the old fashioned fabric shades with fringes, glass or metallic shades would diffuse the light evenly and upwards.

Another classic feature of lighting from the 1920s is geometric pattern.Also, the glass would have been painted in bold colors like ruby red or sapphire blue. Bright colors were very trendy for the creation of spectacular Art Deco Lamps.

Vintage Art Deco Lamps are a direct result for the art deco period which was roughly between 1925 and 1939. Art Deco has grown in popularity as a vintage look mostly due to the restoration of some of our older historic homes across this country.

Vintage Art Deco Lamps reflected the entire design movement which is what make them an ideal showpiece if you want to give a room a vintage feel. Sometimes these lamps will combine a modernist geometric design with classic Greek art. They may include a Middle Eastern or Egyptian artifact look. They may have unusual lighting arrangements. All in all, there is a lot of variation but the bottom line is a design that captures a  nostalgic look and feel for the era.

The design of Lamps and Lighting fixtures actually have quite a history behind them. Knowing about the history of lamps is as fascinating as the act of collecting them. The evolution of the lamp started with the human discovery of fire.

Humans discovered that fire was not limited to cooking their food, keeping them warm, and protecting them from wild animals but also enabled them to see their surroundings when it was dark. So, illumination also became essential to human life.

Fuel has played a major role in the design of lamps and lighting fixtures throughout time. The first lamp designs were open vessels, and they were not even intentionally made. They were naturally present and humans discovered them to be convenient containers of light source.

The first lamps and lighting fixtures were created around 70,000 B.C, with concave rocks and shells serving as vessels for light source. These objects were filled with dry moss soaked with animal fat and ignited.  The fat-soaked moss was also wrapped around a tree branch or animal bones to make torches.

Much later, these natural objects inspired humans to copy them as designs for lamps and lighting fixtures made of pottery, alabaster, and metals. Then, wicks were added to control the rate of the flame. Circa 7th century B.C., the Greeks started making terra-cotta lamps and lighting fixtures which replaced the handheld torches. In fact, the word lamp is derived from the Greek “lampas” which means torch.

The Evolution of Lamps and Lighting Fixtures

The most commonly used fuels until the late 18th century consisted of olive oil, beeswax, fish oil, whale oil, sesame oil, nut oil, and comparable substances. On the other hand, the ancient Chinese collected natural gas in skins to be used for illumination. Kerosene, which is a petroleum derivative, became a popular fuel for lamps and lighting fixtures around 1859, when drilling for petroleum first started.

Coal gas was introduced as lighting fuel as early as 1784. Natural gas was also utilized around this time. The first commercial use of gas lighting began in 1792, when William Murdoch used coal gas for the lamps and lighting fixtures that adorned  his house in Redruth, Cornwall.

The first person to patent coal gas lighting was German inventor Freidrich Winzer (Winsor) in 1804. Another innovation, the "thermolampe" used gas distilled from wood and was patented in 1799. The first U.S. gas light patent was received by David Melville in 1810. Gaslight came into use in streets of most cities in the United States and Europe in the early 19th century.

This development in illumination gave way to low pressure sodium and high pressure mercury lighting in the 1930s. Moreover, the development of electric lamps and lighting fixtures replaced gas lighting in homes at the turn of the 19th century.

Classic Style Lamps and Lighting Fixtures

In the 18th century, a major improvement in lamp design came about with the invention of the central burner. A tight metal enclosure held the fuel source. To control the amount of the fuel used and the intensity of the flame, an adjustable metal pipe was added. It was also during this period that a new design was developed to improve the lamp’s function—a small glass chimney was attached to the lamp to control the airflow to the flame.

The first person to develop the principle of using an oil lamp with a hollow circular wick surrounded by a glass chimney was a Swiss chemist named Ami Argand. It was Argand's innovation that sparked the production of artistically designed lamps and lighting fixtures.

The biggest invention to date however is the electrical lamp.  Thomas Edison’s incandescent light bulb eventually replaced gas as the primary source of energy for lamps. Starting from the 1800s there have been many types of electric lamps such as non lights and fluorescent lamps that became popular for both commercial and home uses.

Another form of lamp is the sodium-vapor tube, which is typically used for street lighting, as well as for other big areas such as mall parking lots. Along with the improvement of the light bulbs, the styles and design of lamps also developed.

From its crude designs of rocks and shells to the modern day electrical lamps and lighting fixtures, lighting revolution has come a long way. As it is, lighting has developed not just into about illuminating one’s home but also into about style.

Residential lighting is not limited to the indoors but to the outdoors as well. Indoor lamps and lighting fixtures come in various types from floor lamps, table lamps and more. Popular styles include Tiffany, rustic, Victorian, and tropical. These styles can also be classified into vintage lamps, antique lamps and contemporary. Basically there is a style for any type of interior design ideas.

The most vital thing to do when choosing a lamp for your home is to reflect on these two ideas: the amount of light you need and the style you are going after.

Vintage Table Lamps display beauty elegance and style with an en-grained character of times past. Nevertheless, this just goes to prove that Tiffany’s influence is very extensive.

Another vintage style that offers the same class as Tiffany’s is the Victorian style vintage table lamps. Victorian style lamp shades can be traced back to the late 1700s when gas was first harnessed for its ability to steadily and continuously power a light source. The Victorian-style table lamp shades are usually adorned with tassels, tulles, and brocaded fabrics and heavy velvets in rich, vibrant colors like red, purple, mauve, plum or lilac. These silky fringed shades are very romantic and they follow the shapes of parasols, canopies, and hats—symbols of elegance and style of the Victorian era. Much later, the designs of Victorian-style vintage table lamps begin to feature skeins of beads and satin chording.

Other vintage styles table lamps worth mentioning are the lovely crystal bases and the simple yet elegant shades of the Art Deco Era. Contemporary table lamps, on the other hand, feature classic designs but they also employ abstract and geometric shapes in their creations. Classic styles of modern lamps include simple blocks or pedestal bases that are topped by cylinder-shaped shades that are usually one-color.

Many other styles of table lamps are readily available on the market and lighting centers. Desk lamps, which are also considered as table lamps, are easily obtainable furniture pieces; but the main purpose of desk lamps, however, is to provide light directly to the desk, not throughout the room—so we can say that desk lamps serves a more functional purpose. On the other hand, a vintage piece like a nice wrought iron table lamp would not only serve as a decorative furniture accessory but also provide enough light that spreads dramatically throughout your room.
